SACO, Maine — A 59-year-old local woman died after a knife attack inside Shaw’s supermarket Wednesday afternoon and another local woman has been charged with murder in her death.
The victim was identified as Wendy Boudreau, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said Wednesday night in a news release. Boudreau is a mother to five adult children.
Under arrest in connection with the stabbing is Connor MacCalister, 31, also of Saco, McCausland said.
According to McCausland, the stabbing took place near the ice cream freezers inside the Shaw’s supermarket shortly before 3 p.m.
Two local EMTs were in the store at the time and immediately gave Boudreau medical assistance, McCausland said. Boudreau was taken to Southern Maine Medical Center, where she died.
Her body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta, where an autopsy is scheduled for Thursday, McCausland said.
“There is no indication the women knew each other and police are still working on a motive,” he said.
Store employees and other shoppers were able to subdue MacCalister inside the store until police arrived, authorities said.
Saco police took MacCalister into custody at the store and she was interviewed at the police station by Maine State Police detectives, who informed her after 7 p.m. that she was being charged with murder.
MacCalister was expected to be taken to the York County Jail. Her first court appearance likely will be Thursday or Friday, McCausland said.
The grocery store was closed as police investigated the crime scene. Police expected to be on scene through Wednesday night.
