PORTLAND, Maine — A Bridgton woman was charged with filing a false police report after claiming she was sexually assaulted earlier this month, according to police.

Sarah Dodge, 34, allegedly filed a hoax report of a sexual assault on the Back Cove Trail on Aug. 12, according to a statement from Portland police.

Dodge had claimed she had been sexually assaulted by an unknown man while walking along the trail and recanted the allegation two days later, the statement read.

On Thursday, Dodge was issued a summons for filing a false report, a Class D misdemeanor, the statement said. If convicted, she faces up to 364 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,000.

She has an Oct. 1 court appearance scheduled.
