I don’t know who shot this video. I don’t know where he or she shot it. All I know is it’s crazy.
The YouTube user who uploaded the video, titled “Feed Time,” included the description: “Don’t know where I went wrong… only had one coon when it all started!”
Judging by the front yard and that comment — and the fact that the human in the video literally throws food to the raccoons — it’s apparent that this person started feeding raccoons and got in too deep.
That will happen.
“Human-fed raccoons often lose their fear of people and may become aggressive when they do not receive handouts as expected,” according to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. “Feeding also encourages raccoons to concentrate in a small area.”
There you have it.
Don’t feed raccoons, folks.
Here are some of the DIFW’s tips on avoiding a scenario like the one in the video:
- Don’t feed them, obviously.
- Secure your garbage cans
- If you feed your pets outside, don’t leave the food out in the evening
- Clean your barbecue grill
- Cover your compost
