STRATHAM, New Hampshire — Dozens of cats, kittens and a bird were found living in “deplorable filth.”

A crew rescued the animals from a suspected hoarding situation in New Hampshire.

The animals are now at a local SPCA shelter and are being treated for a number of health problems. Most of them have fleas and respiratory infections. On top of that, they are all extremely scared because of a lack of socialization.

The animals were rescued from a home in Hooksett, New Hampshire on Thursday, Aug. 27.

Some of the kittens are believed to be as young as 7 weeks.

The homeowner willingly surrendered the animals and isn’t facing charges.

“We’re going to need things like cat litter, cat food,” said SPCA Marketing Director Sheila Ryan. “And certainly financial contributions needed.”

“Living conditions in the house were unfit for humans or animals,” said SPCA Humane Agent Steven Sprowl. “Everywhere you were walking, there were feces on the floor; everywhere you looked, just cats running around and scurrying and running amok.”

The SPCA planned to go back to the home in the following days in search of more animals that may have been hiding. All the animals will be kept at the shelter until they’re healthy enough to be adopted.
