Driver records 1,500th harness racing win

SCARBOROUGH — Shane Taggart recorded his 1,500th career driving win Sunday at Scarborough Downs, guiding Pan Taylor home from off the pace to secure the milestone victory.

Taggart, who calls Maine home, has maintained a roster of horses on the Scarborough backstretch for years while dividing his time driving primarily at the Downs and at Plainridge Racecourse in Massachusetts.

The 37-year-old teamster is a career purse winner of over $3.8 million.

Live racing is featured next weekend at Scarborough Downs on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The Sunday matinee gets underway at 1:30.

Fan dies in fall at Turner Field

EditorsNote: Adds flag flies at half-staff Fan dies in fall at Turner Field

A fan who fell from the upper level of Turner Field behind home plate in the top of the seventh inning on Saturday night was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital.

The fan was identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office on Sunday morning as 60-year-old Gregory K. Murrey, a native of Alpharetta, Ga. An autopsy will be performed, according to the medical examiner’s office.

The U.S. flag flew at half-staff at Turner Field on Sunday to honor Murrey, a season-ticket holder.

No one else was injured when Murrey fell during a game against the New York Yankees, who beat the Braves 3-1. Murrey received emergency medical treatment for about 10 minutes and was given CPR before being taken to Grady Hospital.

Witnesses said the fan was shouting at Alex Rodriguez when the Yankees slugger came to the plate in the seventh, lost his balance and fell about 50 feet below to the concrete. The game continued while Murrey was treated.

Redskins reportedly discussed trading Griffin

Washington Redskins coaches and front office personnel want to part ways with quarterback Robert Griffin III, but team owners are against the move, ESPN reported Sunday.

The Redskins have even told other teams they may be willing to trade Griffin, but no other teams seem interested.

If ownership decides the Redskins must keep Griffin, the team is determined to start a quarterback other than Griffin, according to the ESPN report.

This report ties into the confusion regarding Griffin’s playing status following a concussion.

Redskins head coach Jay Gruden admitted there was confusion over Griffin’s lingering symptoms of a concussion but says the team did everything “by the book.”

Griffin was sidelined for the Redskins’ 31-13 preseason win over the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday night after an independent neurologist reversed his decision and said RG3 was not cleared to play.

Packers receiver Cobb avoids major injury

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Randall Cobb thought at first he broke his collarbone Saturday night, but tests after the preseason game revealed the injury wasn’t that serious.

Cobb suffered an AC joint sprain in his shoulder, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday. While the injury is considered minor, there is no word on whether Cobb will be ready to play in Week 1.

A week after losing No. 1 wide receiver Jordy Nelson for the season with a torn ACL on the first drive of a game, Cobb left Saturday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles after three plays with an injury that he thought would knock him out for an extended period of time.
