UCLA suspends football player after his arrest
UCLA will be without an all-conference defender when it plays Virginia in its season opener on Saturday because of off-the-field transgressions.
UCLA head coach Jim Mora said Tuesday that All-Pac-12 cornerback Ishmael Adams was suspended indefinitely from the team.
The suspension come a day after reports surfaced that Adams had been arrested for an alleged robbery.
Adams allegedly took a cellphone from an Uber driver early Sunday morning, the UCLA police department told ESPN.com. He was arrested and his bail was set at $100,000.
It’s unclear how long Adams will sidelined. Mora said Adams will remain suspended until more facts are gathered.
International teams to play six NBA preseason games
Three top international teams from Turkey, Israel and Brazil will visit the United States for a combined six preseason games against six National Basketball Association teams this October, the league said on Tuesday.
The games open with six-times Turkish League champion Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul taking on the Brooklyn Nets on Oct. 5 before meeting former NBA Most Valuable Player Kevin Durant’s Oklahoma City Thunder on Oct. 9.
Israeli club Maccabi Haifa will face NBA teams in the United States for the fifth time in six years, starting with an Oct. 8 clash with the Memphis Grizzlies followed by a game against Kobe Bryant’s Los Angeles Lakers on Oct. 11.
Paschoalotto/Bauru, which compete in Brazil’s premier basketball league, will play the New York Knicks on Oct. 7 at Madison Square Garden and the Washington Wizards on Oct. 11.
Memphis suspends six bowl brawlers
Memphis suspended six players on Tuesday for their roles in an on-field brawl during last season’s Miami Beach Bowl.
Starting linebacker Leonard Pegues will miss the first 1 1/2 games of the 2015 season, which includes the opener on Saturday against Missouri State and the first half of the second game against Kansas.
Defensive tackle Isadore Outing was suspended for the opener. Defensive tackle Chauncey Lanier and offensive linemen Michael Stannard, Trevon Tate and Nick Thomas were suspended for one half each. Lanier is the only starter in that group.
Fuente said the players performed an additional 326 hours of community service, which was more than the 220 hours the university required as part of their penalty.
The fight took place after Memphis wrapped up a 55-48 double-overtime victory over BYU on Dec. 22.
Hawks to retire Mutombo’s number
The No. 55 that Dikembe Mutombo wore while playing for the Atlanta Hawks will be retired by the team this fall.
Mutombo, who is going into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Sept. 11, will be honoredby the Hawks on Nov. 24 during a game against the Boston Celtics in Philips Arena.
The 7-foot-2 Mutombo played for the Hawks from 1995 to 2001 and ranks second in NBA history in blocked shots and and is third in franchise history in blocks and rebounds per game.
Other numbers retired by the Hawks are Dominique Wilkins (21), Lou Hudson (23) and Bob Pettit (9).
Mutombo spent 18 years in the NBA and averaged 9.8 points, 10.3 rebounds. 2.8 blocked shots and 1.0 assists in 1,196 career games.
Falcons reach injury settlement with Konz
The Atlanta Falcons announced Tuesday that they have reached an injury settlement with guard Peter Konz.
The agreement allows the team and player to part ways.
The 6-foot-5, 317-pound Konz was selected by the Falcons in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
In three seasons with the Falcons, he played in 39 games while making 28 starts. Konz has seen action at both guard and center during his career.
He suffered a torn ACL last October and is not completely recovered.
