CHINA, Maine — An Augusta man died over the weekend while swimming in China Lake, according to the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.

A cause of death has not been released for Kenneth Hagan, 74, according to Chief Deputy Ryan Reardon.

Police were called to a Lakeview Drive residence around 5 p.m. Saturday, when it was reported Hagan had gone under the water and did not resurface, Reardon said.

Hagan’s sister had been communicating with him on a nearby dock, from which Hagan was swimming back and forth in water about 5 feet deep, the chief deputy said.

After Hagan was pulled from the pond, he was brought to the dock, where medical personnel performed CPR and other procedures for about 20 to 25 minutes before he was pronounced dead, Reardon said.

Reardon believes Hagan may have had some sort of medical condition, but an official cause of death has not been released.
