PORTLAND, Maine — A local man suffered injuries considered life-threatening late Friday night when he crashed his vehicle on Interstate 295, minutes after police say he fled the scene of another accident.
Jabril Mohamud, 30, of Portland was in critical condition at Maine Medical Center in Portland as of Saturday night, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.
Just before midnight Friday, Portland police went to mile marker 7 on I-295 after reports of a rollover crash. Responders found an overturned four-door Hyundai sedan with Mohamud trapped inside.
McCausland said the same vehicle was involved in a crash a few minutes before on the Exit 7 northbound ramp in Portland and fled the scene. He offered no details on that first accident, but said the driver headed northbound from Exit 7 in the southbound lanes of I-295, then “became airborne and [the vehicle] landed on its roof in the northbound lanes of Tukey’s Bridge,” McCausland said.
The interstate was closed in the area for about three hours Saturday morning while police reconstructed the crash.
