Jets’ Smith won’t press charges against ex-teammate
New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith said Monday that he does not intend to press charges against former teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali, who punched him during a locker-room confrontation last month.
Enemkpali broke the starting quarterback’s jaw in two places Aug. 11, and Smith is expected to miss the first month of the season.
Smith, who had screws and metal plates inserted into his jaw, said he has been pain-free for two or three weeks.
Speaking to media for the first time since he was injured, Smith did not say much about the incident with Enemkpali, who was released by the team immediately afterward.
“I just want to move on. That’s what I’ve done,” said Smith, who did not reveal whether the linebacker apologized to him or whether Smith paid the $600 thought to be the source of contention.
Mets’ Harvey to make controversial start
New York Mets right-hander Matt Harvey (12-7, 2.60 ERA), the subject of much discussion on a possible innings limit, will face Washington RHP Jordan Zimmermann (12-8, 3.38 ERA) in the second game of the series Tuesday.
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Monday that Harvey may skip multiple turns over the rest of the season.
Alderson suggested Harvey may make just two more starts before the postseason begins, although he said there was no definite resolution of how Harvey will be used.
He has pitched 166 1/3 innings so far.
Giants’ Panik returns
It may be too late to save the sinking San Francisco Giants, but Giants second baseman Joe Panik was activated Monday after missing more than a month with a back injury.
Panik, 24, was named to the All-Star squad this year, and is hitting .309 with seven homers as well as playing excellent defense.
Panik’s last game before going on the disabled list was Aug. 1, at which point the Giants were 57-46 and 1 1/2 games out of first place in the National League West. In Panik’s absence the Giants went 14-20 and entered Monday’s action 7 1/2 games out of first.
Rookie Kelby Tomlinson was the primary replacement at second base in Panik’s absence and he hit .306 in the 30 games he played.
Packers’ Coxson retiring after hit
Green Bay Packers wide receiver Adrian Coxson, who was taken off the practice field in an ambulance on Aug. 1, announced he is retiring from football.
He said the “next hit to my head could possibly kill me or be life-damaging.”
The rookie was taken to the hospital for additional testing after having extreme dizziness on the third day of training camp.
Pitt RB Conner out for the season
Pittsburgh Panthers running back James Conner, the Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year last season, will miss the rest of this season after suffering a torn MCL on Saturday, coach Pat Narduzzi announced Monday.
Conner injured his knee in the second quarter of Pitt’s 45-37 win against Youngstown State.
It was not believed to be a significant injury at the time, and Narduzzi said after the game that Conner was “fine.”
However, further tests Sunday revealed a tear, and Conner will have surgery, probably this week.
