FREEPORT, Maine — State police are investigating after road crews found a 45-year-old Kittery woman with a swollen right eye sitting on the side of Interstate 295 early Wednesday morning.
Freeport police and rescue workers went to the southbound onramp at Desert Road just after 1 a.m. after a Maine Department of Transportation crew reported finding the woman, Freeport police Lt. Susan Nourse said.
No vehicle was near the woman, Nourse said.
“We tried to determined what happened to her but she wouldn’t say much,” Nourse said. “She made some reference to being in a car.”
Freeport rescue workers took the woman to an area hospital.
The Maine State Police, which typically responds to calls on I-295, did not have a unit in the area, prompting Freeport police to take the call, but state police have taken over the investigation, according to Nourse.
