ORONO — Danielle Aviani and Cassidy Svetek each scored first-half goals in the first 30 minutes as the Black Bears went on to beat the Providence College Friars 4-1 in field hockey action Friday

The Bears improved to 4-1.

Nicole Sevey and Madison Cummings each chipped in with a second-half goal for Maine before Providence’s Andrienne Houle answered with an unassisted goal at the 64:42 mark.

Casey Crowley chipped in with two assists for Maine and Sevey added one.

Maine had a slight edge in shots, 12-11, with Providence’s Deidra Clymer making four saves. Emma Cochran made four saves in the first half for the Black Bears and Emily Corbett made two in the second half.

Men’s Soccer

UMFK 7, Davis 0

At Johnson City, N.Y., Lewis Temple scored three of his team’s six first-half goals as UMaine-Fort Kent rolled to the victory.

Justin Soontiens, Stuart Conway and Kyle Robin each added a first-half goal for UMFK (8-0) and Milton Christopher scored in the second half. Kurt Skeritt chipped in with two assists.

Castleton 2, MMA 0

At Bangor, Jake Tietgens scored a first-half goal and Cameron Rossi-Crete added one in the second half as Castleton State shut out Maine Maritime Academy at Husson University’s Challenge Cup.

Steven Koenemann assisted on the first goal and the second was unassisted.

Amir Pasic made three saves on eight shots for Castleton (2-2) while Marshall Spear and Joshua Reeks combined for six saves on 16 shots for MMA (1-4).

Women’s Soccer

Maine 5, Marist 0

At Orono, goalkeeper Claudia Dube-Trempe now has four shutouts on the season and made 11 saves during the game.

Maine’s Alex Abrams earned her first goal after a turnover at midfield and a 35-yard kick that went over the goalkeeper for Maine’s first-half goal.

Maine took control offensively in the second half, scoring four goals. Anetra Byfield scored twice and Kate Evans and Kaitlin Saulter each added a goal.

Walsh 3, UMFK 1

At North Canton, Ohio, Walsh scored the game’s first two goals and then held off UMaine-Fort Kent to hand the Bengals their first loss of the season.

All of the scoring occurred in the first half with Jessie Gearhart and Kristen Conti each scoring for Walsh four minutes into the game.

Veronica De La Cruz answered for UMFK from a Kayla Richards assist at the 13:48 mark, but Gearhart scored again for Walsh to restore the two-goal lead 18 minutes later.

Michelle Delgadillo finished with two saves on 11 shots for UMFK (7-1) while Michaella Stucky made four saves on 12 shots for Walsh (2-1-1).
