ALFRED, New York — Husson rushed for 356 yards and five touchdowns Saturday, rolling to a 44-2 win over Alfred State at Pioneer Stadium.
John Smith had over 100 rushing yards in the first quarter and finished with 184 yards on 29 carries and three touchdowns, while Logan Steward added 128 yards on 18 rushes, including a 49-yard touchdown scamper early in the fourth quarter.
The Eagles defense smothered Alfred State (0-2) to the tune of a 41 yards of total offense, the fewest allowed in a single game, including minus-9 net yards rushing.
Husson’s Kenny Sweet totaled three interceptions, tying the school’s single-game record held by Adam Scott and Chad Bennett (twice). He also had four pass breakups.
Husson forced four turnovers Saturday and has seven in the first two contests this year.
The Eagles racked up 411 yards of total offense.
After giving up a safety on a bad snap on a punt, Husson rattled off 44 unanswered points, starting with Smith’s one-yard plunge in the first quarter to cap a 55-yard drive.
Deon Wiggins returned a punt 55 yards for a score nearly two minutes later to make it 14-3.
Smith posted a 6-yard TD run 29 seconds into the second quarter to finish off an 11-play, 92-yard drive. His third score came from three yards out to cap a 14-play, 75-yard march.
Alfred fell on its own fumble in the end zone five minutes before halftime, giving the Eagles a 30-2 edge.
After a scoreless third quarter, Steward’s touchdown burst came on the second play of the fourth, as he accounted for all 58 yards on two-play series.
Joe Farrell’s blocked punt set up a Stephen Day 3-yard TD run with 5:17 remaining.
Kenneth Nelson had 13 tackles to lead Alfred State.
