BRUNSWICK, Maine — More than four years after a three-alarm blaze destroyed a landmark building at the corner of Maine and Mason streets in Brunswick, Bangor Savings Bank seeks approval to build a new, 3,400-square-foot bank, including two drive-up windows, at the site.

Brunswick’s Staff Review Committee has given preliminary approval to the project, proposed for two parcels of land. One is the site of Blessings, a resale furniture shop, and the other is vacant after an April 2011 fire that burned the two-and-a-half story Greek Revival-style building that, at the time, housed apartments and shops.

According to plans submitted to the town, the one-story professional office building would include a rear-facing, double-drive-through facility and a 15-space, landscaped parking lot shielded by a pocket park at the intersection of Maine and Mason streets.

Plans call for a red brick building with extensive heavy moldings along hipped roof eaves, consistent with much of Maine Street.

To make way for the project, an existing building at 11 Mason St., owned by Dominic and Diane Vella of Brunswick, would be demolished. According to a structural report submitted by Freeport-based CCJ Developers, the buildings is in “less than good condition” and in need of renovation at all levels in order to salvage it.

Representatives of Freeport-based CJ Developers were scheduled to appear before the town’s Village Review Board on Tuesday evening. They will then take their proposal to the Brunswick Planning Board on Sept. 22.
