JONESBORO, Maine — A 30-year-old Addison man was arrested last weekend in connection with a burglary at Barren View Golf Course, Chief Deputy Michael Crabtree said Friday in a news release.

William Popham is charged with burglary, theft by unauthorized taking and aggravated criminal mischief, Crabtree said. Popham was arrested on Sept. 13 and released on bail from Washington County Jail the following day.

The series of events that led to Popham’s arrest began shortly before 1:30 a.m. Sept. 13, when the golf course’s manager, who lives across the street from the facility, noticed some suspicious activity and called the Washington County Regional Communications Center.

Deputies who were called to the golf course determined that items had been taken from the clubhouse, Crabtree said.

In large part because the manager was able to get a license plate number from a vehicle seen at the golf course during the burglary, deputies were able to quickly identify Popham as a suspect in the case, Crabtree said.

Deputies allegedly found and recovered items taken from the clubhouse at Popham’s home. They then arrested him and took him to Washington County Jail, Crabtree said.

Crabtree said the burglary remains under investigation.
