TURNER, Maine — Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department officials said they have identified the man who is believed to have been driving the vehicle that struck and killed Brittany Stanhope Saturday night in Turner.

According to the sheriff’s department, a 27-year-old man called police after seeing the story on the news.

Stanhope, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene on Buckfield Road, also known as Route 117.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department said Stanhope and a friend were parked on the side of the road after experiencing vehicle problems and she was hit after stepping out to get something out of the back seat.

Sheriffs said the man claims he thought he struck a deer. He is cooperating with officials. His vehicle has been seized and taken to the Maine State Police Crime Lab.
