SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Shoppers in South Portland soon will be spending more money at the checkout.

South Portland City Council passed the 5 cent bag fee ordinance Monday night. The council also voted to ban Styrofoam.

Officials say it’s almost an exact copy of the ordinance Portland passed several months ago.

The mayor says plastic bags are littered throughout the city and hopes the ordinance will put an end to that.

South Portland shoppers will have to pay 5 cents for each paper and plastic bag they use.

The ordinance goes into effect March 1, 2016.
