FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — A local man accused of breaking into a federal government employee’s home on Monday and stealing a gun was arrested on Tuesday.
Robert Nichols, 30, of Fort Fairfield, who was charged with burglary and theft, has a history of other theft convictions, according to Sgt. Shawn Newell.
Nichols remains at the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton pending a hearing on the charges.
A High Street resident identified only as a federal law enforcement employee reported on Monday that a gun was missing from home, according to Fort Fairfield Police Chief William Campbell. Nothing else was stolen.
On Tuesday, Newell used eyewitness reports to track down the suspect, making an arrest and recovering the firearm, Campbell said.
Others were suspected of being involved in the burglary and more charges are expected to be filed later this week, according to Newell.
No other details were provided as the investigation continues. No possible motive was offered in the case.
