HAMPDEN — Eastern Maine Board No. 111 of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials is offering a Prospective Officials Class for any individuals, 18 years of age or older, who are interested in becoming certified basketball officials. Residents in Hancock, Knox, Penobscot, Piscataquis and Waldo counties are eligible to take the class, which will be held 6-8:30 p.m. Sundays and Wednesdays, starting Sunday, Sept. 27, at Reed’s Brook Middle School, Room 164. ORONO — Registration for all Maine Junior Black Bears youth hockey house divisions is now open. Programs are available for ages 4-18 and include Learn to Skate/Learn to Play in partnership with the University of Maine Hockey teams. Other age groups are Midgets, Bantams, Peewees, Squirts, and Mites. All teams are co-ed and girls can cross-roster for U-12 all-girls team. BREWER — Brewer Youth hockey is accepting registrations for its Learn to Skate/Learn to Play Hockey sessions. There will be two, 12-week sessions this season. Participants can sign up for one session or both. Sessions will be held at 12:40 p.m. Sundays, beginning Oct. 25, at the Penobscot Ice Arena, 90 Acme Road. The cost will be $75 per session. SEARS ISLAND — The third annual Viking 5K Race/Walk for Education will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, on Sears Island.Medals to the Top male and female finishers as well as awards for the top three places, male and female, in all age groups. The “zero vehicular traffic” race is on conservation land and is a loop that combines a wide, paved avenue with packed gravel. Race starts at 11 a.m. sharp. OLD TOWN — Penobscot/Piscataquis/Hancock Area Special Olympics will hold a benefit 5K road race, 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, starting at Orono/Old Town YMCA in Old Town. The race is on a flat, fast course utilizing roads and bike paths. New and experienced runners and walkers are welcome. There will be awards for top finishers, first and second place age group winners, top three Special Olympic athletes, as well as the oldest and youngest participants. Advance entry fee is $20 until Oct. 7, after which it will be $25. BRUNSWICK — The 10th annual Phil Soule 5K “Phlail” has been scheduled for Homecoming Sunday, Oct. 18, at Farley Field House on the campus of Bowdoin College. The free 1/2K Kids Fun Run begins at 9:30 a.m., the 5K race had a $20 entry fee, and will begin at 10 a.m., with online registration available at http://www.GetMeRegistered.com/PhilSoulePhlail. One of the founders of the Maine Rowdies running club, Phil was a competitive runner. Marathons, ultra-marathons, and triathlons were his favorite events. TRIATHLON
ORONO — Black Bear Triathlon, 8:30 a.m. Sept. 27, University of Maine, sponsored by UMaine Campus Recreation and sanctioned by USA Triathlon. The event begins with a 525-yard swim in UMaine’s Wallace Pool, followed by a 12.5-mile bike race into Old Town, and ends with a 3.1-mile run through UMaine fields and trails. Open to athletes ages 16 and older. Relay component for teams of two or three athletes. Athletes will self-seed when registering based on their estimated time for a 525-yard swim.
