PORTLAND, Maine — Cumberland County Jail officials and the U.S. Marshals Service are investigating the alleged assault on Monday of an inmate being held there, Chief Deputy Naldo Gagnon of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said Friday in a news release.
Jail administrators were notified of the alleged assault Wednesday and began an investigation, Gagnon said. The incident occurred in one of the housing units at the jail, when an inmate being held for the U.S. Marshals Service reportedly was assaulted by two other inmates.
Additional details might be released further into the investigation, Gagnon said. The names of the inmates involved are not being released at this time.
