GRAY, Maine — A 34-year-old New Gloucester woman was arrested Saturday night, charged with leaving her child alone in a car.

According to a news release from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were alerted around 11 p.m. Saturday to an intoxicated female who was acting suspiciously on Main Street, near Gray Square. At about the same time, the woman — Samantha Lovering — flagged down a deputy and said her car had been stolen.

Her vehicle was located a distance away with her 7-year old son asleep in the back. The investigation revealed the child had been left alone in the vehicle for several hours. It was also found that the vehicle had not been stolen but had been left there by Lovering.

Lovering was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a class D misdemeanor.

She was taken to the Cumberland County Jail in Portland and had bail set at $60 unsecured.

The child was picked up at the scene by his father.
