PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police arrested a 42-year-old man Saturday, charging him with the Friday robbery of the University Credit Union on Forest Avenue.

Thomas Monat was arrested at 1:30 p.m. Saturday on the 700 block of Forest Avenue and charged with the previous day’s robbery at the credit union located about three blocks away, according to a news release from the Portland Police Department.

Police spotted him walking in the area and officers recognized him as being wanted for violating probation. He was taken into custody without incident. Following an additional investigation, he was charged with robbery, as well as being held on a warrant for probation revocation, according to the news release.

Monat was identified by several callers who saw the credit union surveillance photos in the media. Police thanked the public and the media outlets who distributed this information, which led to a speedy arrest.

Monat is being held without bail at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland.
