GRAY, Maine — Gray skies and heavy rain were making for a messy commute Wednesday morning, and forecasters expect the inclement weather to last all day.

With heavy rain comes flood watches, and such alerts are in effect for the entire state, according to the National Weather Service.

At least 3 and up to 5 inches of rain are possible throughout the state, according to the weather service. Rain is expected to taper off later Wednesday evening as a low-pressure system churns away.

Flood watches are in effect through Thursday morning. Low-lying and poor drainage areas pose the biggest risk for flooding.

Motorists are urged to use cautionary speeds on the state’s highways to avoid hydroplaning.

The City of Portland announced Wednesday morning Forest Avenue has been shut down between Woodford and Vannah Avenues.
