Red Devils shut out Golden Bucks

BUCKSPORT — Andrew Speed scored two goals and Zach Randall chipped in with one goal and two assists to help the Central Red Devils roll by the Bucksport Golden Bucks 5-0 in high school boys soccer action Tuesday.

Andrew Prescott and Caleb Shaw each added a goal for Central (8-1) of Corinth while Shaw also notched an assist. Gage Poulin made three saves on eight shots.

Cody Larsen finished with 15 saves on 21 shots for the Bucks (0-7-1).

Bulls’ Rose to be out for two weeks after surgery

Former All-Star point guard Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls is expected to be sidelined for two weeks after having surgery on Wednesday to repair a facial fracture, the National Basketball Association team said.

Rose, the league’s most valuable player during the 2010-11 season, was struck by an accidental elbow during the team’s first day of practice on Tuesday and sustained a left orbital fracture.

“Derrick Rose’s procedure went as expected today,” the Bulls said in a statement. “At this time it is estimated he will be able to resume basketball activities in two weeks.”

Chicago open their regular season on Oct. 27.

The 26-year-old guard, a three-time All-Star, has repeatedly struggled for fitness during a career which has been derailed by two knee surgeries in two years and a host of other smaller ailments.

Patriots release tight end Watson

The New England Patriots released linebacker Dekoda Watson from the active roster and offensive lineman Chris Barker, wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins and defensive lineman Joe Vellano from the practice squad on Wednesday.

Watson has one special teams tackle this year for the Patriots.

New England released Watson on Aug. 31 and re-signed him on Sept. 16. He played in two games this season for the Patriots and in 72 during his five-year NFL career.

Oilers’ Eberle out 4-6 weeks with shoulder injury

Edmonton Oilers forward Jordan Eberle will miss four to six weeks with a shoulder injury, the team announced Wednesday.

Eberle left Tuesday night’s preseason game against the Arizona Coyotes in the first period after a collision against the wall. Eberle took a hit from Coyotes center Kyle Chipchura behind the Arizona net. He did not return.

Following the game, Eberle was seen wearing sling for his arm.

Eberle, 25, was the Oilers’ top scorer last season with 24 goals and 39 assists in 81 games.

NBA replay center referees to rule on select calls

In an effort to streamline the replay review process, the NBA announced Wednesday that current referees will be assigned to the replay center to make rulings on out-of-bounds calls, shots at the end of a quarter, shot clock violations on baskets, goaltending and several other plays.

The NBA Board of Governors unanimously approved the instant replay modifications on Wednesday that will be implemented at the beginning of this season.

Referees on the court will still be in charge of requesting reviews, but the officials in the replay center will take over administration of specific calls to help preserve the flow of games.

Knee injury sidelines Packers TE Quarless

Green Bay Packers tight end Andrew Quarless was placed on injured reserve with a designation to return, the team announced Wednesday.

Quarless was knocked out of Monday night’s game against Kansas City after a low hit by Chiefs defensive back Marcus Peters on a reception. Quarless suffered a sprained knee.

No surgery will not needed to repair the knee. Quarless will be eligible to return for a Thanksgiving game against the Chicago Bears.

Quarless’ two catches against the Chiefs were his first of the season.
