PORTLAND, Maine — A 57-year-old Lyman man was arrested Thursday after he allegedly posed as a police officer and sexually assaulted a Portland woman.

Gary Mariner is facing charges of gross sexual assault and impersonating a public servant, Assistant Police Chief Vern Malloch of the Portland Police Department said Friday in a news release.

The alleged incident that led to Mariner’s arrest happened on Sept. 15, when a 24-year-old woman reported to police that she had been engaging in prostitution when a man picked her up.

“He identified himself as a police officer, displaying a badge and a handgun,” Malloch said. “He threatened to arrest the woman and demanded sex.”

According to records at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy, there is no indication that Mariner is or has ever been a police officer in Maine, the assistant police chief said.

Mariner is is being held at Cumberland County Jail on $100,000 bail, Malloch said.
