BANGOR, Maine — The January 2014 fire on Dillingham Street that resulted in the death of two dogs has been deemed arson by fire investigators, Sgt. Ken Grimes of the state fire marshal’s office confirmed late Monday.

The case has been turned over to the Penobscot County District Attorney’s Office, the fire investigator said.

“It’s in their hands now,” Grimes said of the lengthy investigation that started 22 months ago.

The Jan. 17, 2014 blaze that severely damaged 40 Dillingham St. was intentionally set, he said. One renter who said she was upstairs when fire alarms in the two-story home rang out told the Bangor Daily News that there were two fires in the house. The woman’s daughter said she was outside smoking a cigarette when the alarms sounded. Bangor fire investigators said shortly after the flames were extinguished that the second floor of the house had extensive damage due to water and smoke.
