CUMBERLAND, Maine — A student who attends Mabel I. Wilson School in Cumberland has been hospitalized with viral meningitis, Superintendent Jeff Porter said in a letter posted on MSAD #51’s website.

According to the Maine Center for Disease Control, meningitis is an inflammation of the tissue that covers the brain and spinal cord. Viral meningitis is the most common type of the disease but it is often less severe than bacterial meningitis and most people usually get better without treatment.

Symptoms of viral meningitis include fever, headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to bright lights, vomiting, sleepiness or trouble waking up, lethargy, lack of appetite and nausea, according to the Maine Center for Disease Control.
