PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police arrested a 58-year-old man in connection with a robbery Monday at Bangor Savings Bank on Forest Avenue, Assistant Police Chief Vernon Malloch said in a news release.

The robbery happened at 11:50 a.m., when a man later identified as Francis J. Ready of Portland entered the bank brandishing a handgun and demanding cash from tellers, Malloch said.

There were no customers in the bank at the time, the assistant chief said. After being given an undisclosed amount of money, Ready fled the bank on foot, he said.

Ready was taken into custody a short distance away on Forest Avenue by patrol officers, Malloch said.

No one was injured in the robbery.

Malloch said the FBI also is investigating and that Ready likely will be will be charged with bank robbery.
