NASHUA, New Hampshire — Elizabeth Terry and Taylor Shaw each scored two goals in the first 22 minutes of the first half on Monday, leading Husson University of Bangor to a 7-3 field hockey victory over Rivier College.

Kayla Royer also scored two goals while Lauren Russell added the other for the Eagles (5-6). Mikayla Toth provided two assists with Kerianne Downing and Libby Kain posting one each.

Kaitlin Dolloff made seven saves.

Jordan Parece, Marykate Sweeney and Leah Ingalls tallied a goal apiece for 2-11 Rivier. Stevie Charest and Emily Foster combined to make 12 saves.


Gamecocks’ Spurrier steps down

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is retiring, effective immediately, and an interim head coach will be named Tuesday, The State newspaper of Columbia, South Carolina, reported Monday.

Spurrier, 70, informed his team of his decision Monday, and quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus is expected to be named the interim head coach, a source told The State.

Spurrier is in his 11th season with the Gamecocks after returning to college football following a stint as a head coach in the NFL. He built South Carolina into a national power, but the Gamecocks on just seven games last year and it is 2-4 this season.

He won the 1996 national championship and six SEC titles in 12 years at Florida.
