PORTLAND, Maine — Cumberland County District Attorney Stephanie Anderson announced Tuesday she has assigned Deputy District Attorney Meg Elam to lead prosecutions of sex trafficking and other forms of sexual exploitation in the county.

“These are not crimes that only happen in Third World countries,” Anderson said in a statement. We are just now becoming aware of the depth and breadth of all forms of commercial sexual exploitation in our state. Because the Internet is everywhere, the opportunity to exploit another person via the Internet is everywhere.”

Elam will work with Cumberland County law enforcement agencies to uncover commercial sexual exploitation, prosecute “johns” and reach out to victims of commercial sexual exploitation, including minors.

Elam will also work to increase community awareness beyond law enforcement.
