NORTH OXFORD, Maine — A pair of hikers from Massachusetts are recovering after spending the night in the western Maine wilderness Sunday night, according to the Maine Warden Service.
Mary Burnham, 28, of Jamaica Plain and Seamus Langan, 31, of Quincy, got separated from their hiking party of six on Sunday, Cpl. John MacDonald said.
The pair and their party had started their hike at the Upper Success Pond Road trailhead and were heading toward Old Speck Mountain, MacDonald said.
Two members of the party decided to return to their vehicle and drove to the pre-planned end point at the Grafton Notch trailhead on Route 26, while the remaining four hikers, including Burnham and Langan, continued toward Old Speck Mountain. Burnham and Langan apparently got separated from the rest of the group at the summit, took the Mahoosuc Notch Trail Loop and got lost.
Searchers were deployed at 4 a.m. Monday and radio contact was made with the lost hikers at 11 a.m. Burnham and Langan had been carrying a handheld radio that made communication possible.
MacDonald said the pair were in good condition upon being found and a hospital trip was not required.
