AUGUSTA, Maine — A Waterville woman who accidentally shot her husband while turkey hunting in China in May pled guilty to an assault while hunting charge last month and will take a hunter safety course.

That is one of multiple conditions of a deferred disposition placed on Janice Jacques, 58, Kennebec County District Attorney Maeghan Maloney said Tuesday.

The other conditions of Jacques’ plea, which are in effect for a year, include making a $150 donation to Operation Game Thief, not committing any crimes and paying a monthly supervision fee of $25, Maloney said.

If Jacques complies with all the conditions, the charge will be dropped, Maloney said. She also will be allowed to hunt again upon completing the hunter safety course.

“This agreement is because I did not think her actions were any way intentional,” Maloney said.

Jacques’ husband did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
