HANOVER, New Hampshire — The University of Maine field hockey team didn’t allow its recent national ranking to provide a false sense of security on Tuesday afternoon.

Madison Cummings on a shot from low in the circle off a feed from Samantha Gomes at 30:23 of the first half, giving the Black Bears the margin of victory in a 2-1 win over host Dartmouth College.

Nicole Sevey had put UMaine, 13-2 and ranked No. 19 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll, ahead with an unassisted goal at the 3:54 mark. Rebecca Hu answered for Dartmouth (4-7) at 25:42.

Emily Corbett and Emma Cochran combined to make only one save for the Black Bears, who outshot the Big Green 12-10 and had a 7-2 edge in penalty corners.

Paige Duffy made four stops for Dartmouth.

Women’s Soccer

MMA 1, UM-Machias 0

At Castine, Emily Wyman converted a pass from Tori Cooper at 35:47 of the first half, accounting for the only goal of the contest as the Mariners edged the Clippers.

Maggie McConkey was not forced to make any saves for 6-6-1 Maine Maritime Academy.

Aisling Farragher-Gemma racked up 15 saves for the University of Maine-Machias (9-3-3).

Colby 5, Husson 1

At Waterville, Aliza Van Leesten scored three goals to propel Colby College to a nonconference win over Husson University of Bangor.

Leesten scored twice in the first 11 ½ minutes for the Mules (4-6-1) and added one in the second half. Katrina Holt and Emily Price posted a goal each, while Katherine Gillespie, Emily Martin and Catherine Fraser contributed assists. Samantha Rizzo made five saves.

Leah Hibbard scored an unassisted goal for the Eagles (5-7-1). Kayla Jordan and Jordyn Hopkins combined to make nine saves.

UMFK 2, Point Park 0

At Pittsburgh, Amairani Carbajal’s unassisted first-half goal on a 22-yard free kick sparked the Bengals to victory.

Marie-Laurent Montagne scored the other goal for the University of Maine-Fort Kent (15-2) off an assist from Katherine Ferland. Michelle Delgadillo picked off 10 saves.

Erica Roney made 12 saves for 6-4-2 Point Park.

FOOTBALL

Florida appeals QB’s suspension

The University of Florida filed an appeal of quarterback Will Grier’s one-year suspension handed down by the NCAA.

Grier admitted to taking a performance-enhancing substance unknowingly by consuming an over-the-counter product without studying the contents label and checking with the team’s medical staff. Grier will practice with the team during the suspension.

Grier has completed 65.8 percent of his passes this season and thrown for 10 touchdowns, three interceptions and 1,204 yards.

Florida will travel to face No. 6 LSU (5-0) in an SEC showdown on Saturday night. Sophomore Treon Harris is expected to start against LSU.
