WASHINGTON, Maine — A school bus carrying students struck a moose calf here Friday morning.

The driver and two students aboard were not injured. The calf died, according to Regional School Unit 40 Business Manager Karla Miller.

Damage to the bus was estimated at $700, she said. The bus driver contacted police and waited for a deputy with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office to arrive before delivering the middle and high school students to school.

The collision occurred on the morning run on West Washington Road. A full-sized moose had crossed the road in front of the bus but the driver did not see the calf in time to avoid striking it, she told police.
