BATH, Maine — A Bath man was arrested Monday and charged with 12 counts including aggravated assault of a 4-month-old child on multiple occasions.
Payson Martin, 20, was indicted last week by a Sagadahoc County grand jury on six counts Class B aggravated assault, three counts of Class C assault of a child younger than 6 years old and three counts of misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child, Bath police Lt. Robert Savary said Tuesday.
Three counts were elevated to aggravated assault because of the extent of the injuries, Savary said.
The Maine Department of Health and Human Services notified Bath police in March of a suspected case of child abuse, and police worked with DHHS, medical staff and state child abuse experts to investigate and determine whether abuse occurred, he said.
Following his arrest Monday, Martin was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset and has been held there on $25,000 bail. A court date was not immediately available Tuesday.
