BELFAST, Maine — No injuries were reported Thursday afternoon after a car went up in flames in a supermarket parking lot, according to police.
Belfast police Sgt. John Gibbs said the vehicle’s owner, Luke Merrithew, 22, of Belfast arrived to work at Hannaford around 12:30 p.m., and sometime between then and 1:40, his vehicle burst into flames.
Gibbs arrived at the scene around 1:40 shortly after a passer-by saw smoke billowing from the trunk.
Gibbs said he managed to control the fire with a fire extinguisher before the city’s fire department arrived on scene.
Despite the fact the car was parked close to the supermarket building, there was no damage to Hannaford and no injuries were reported.
Gibbs believes a discarded cigarette and an electrical issue with the vehicle were the likely causes.
