SKOWHEGAN, Maine — Officials are investigating an apartment fire that was intentionally set Monday morning, according to Skowhegan fire Chief Shawn Howard.
Crews were dispatched to an 11-unit Water Street building shortly after 6 a.m. for a first-floor fire, Howard said.
Firefighters managed to assist the tenant in escaping and he was taken to Redington-Fairview Hospital by ambulance, Howard said.
The unit had heavy fire damage and is no longer inhabitable, while there was minor smoke damage to other units, Howard said. The other units are inhabitable and tenants were allowed to return once firefighters cleared the scene.
Skowhegan police and the state fire marshal’s office are collaborating on the criminal investigation of the incident, along with Skowhegan firefighters. No mutual aid was required and the units had working smoke detectors.
