BANGOR, Maine — The state fire marshal’s office on Friday charged a New York man with arson in connection with a fire at a vacant building earlier this month.
Devaughn James, 23, of Queens was arrested after a car he was a passenger in was stopped by police on Hallowell Road in Chelsea. He is charged with two counts of arson and criminal mischief, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.
James was taken to the Kennebec County Jail and is being held on $100,000 bail.
Fire Investigator Jeremy Damren said James is accused of setting a fire at an unoccupied building on Whitehouse Road on Oct. 6, McCausland said. The building, a former seasonal camp that had been moved to the property, was gutted in the fire.
At the time of the fire, James was staying with friends across the street.
The building belonged to Michael and Barbara Bickford of Vassalboro and was valued at $25,000.
The Maine State Police, Augusta police and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency assisted in the investigation.
