ORONO, Maine — The Maine Black Bears scored a goal in each half to defeat the Vermont Catamounts 2-1 in an America East field hockey match Friday.
Maine improved to 16-3 overall and 6-1 in America East. Vermont slipped to 4-14 and 2-6.
The Bears struck nine minutes into the game when Danielle Aviani converted off a Libby Riedl assist for her ninth goal of the season.
Casey Crowley gave Maine a 2-0 lead on an assist from Katie Bingle 15 minutes into the second half. Vermont answered with Molly Higgins’ unassisted goal about 18 minutes later.
Maine outshot Vermont 21-3 with Lena Benwood making five saves. Emma Cochran and Emily Corbett split time in goal for the Bears, with Corbett making one save.

At Orono, Alyson Matteau scored off an assist from Audra Richards with 3:05 gone in overtime, lifting the Black Bears to a Hockey East victory over the Friars at Alfond Arena.
Kendra Goodrich had staked Providence (0-6, 0-2 HE) to a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal at 10:24 of the third period. However, UMaine (4-4, 2-2 HE) answered at the 18:49 mark when Brooke Stacey scored off assists from Emilie Brigham and Richards.
Meghann Treacy came up with 27 saves for the Black Bears, while Madison Myers registered 16 stops for Providence.
