CASTINE, Maine — Jacob Doolan scored on a 6-yard run to cap a 77-yard scoring drive early in the fourth quarter and Chad Martin converted the PAT kick to lift Maine Maritime Academy to a 21-20 New England Football Conference victory over Curry at Ritchie Field.
Maine Maritime Academy (2-5) bounced back to pitch a second-half shutout after Curry (3-5) scored 20 points in the second quarter. The Mariners churned out 379 rushing yards while stuffing the Colonels to minus-1 yard on the ground.
Fullback James Ferrar gained 156 yards on 20 carries and halfback Joe DiBiase netted 148 yards on 15 attempts. Doolan finished with 20 carries for 81 yards.
Curry did all of its damage through the air as Riley Cote completed 24 of 40 passes for 318 yards and three scores. Jake Cawlina caught eight balls for 173 yards and two touchdowns and Jordan Shairs made seven receptions for 65 yards.
Cody Chapman headed a balanced defensive effort for MMA with six tackles. Johnny Weymouth added five and a fumble recovery.
Steve Grogan sparked the Colonels with 13 tackles and two forced fumbles.
Curry grabbed a 14-0 lead during a span of 2:35 in the second quarter. Cote threw a 13-yard TD pass to Nate Chartrand, then Cote hit Cawlina on an 18-yard scoring toss.
MMA capitalized on a fumble to get on the board via Michael Fahey’s 2-yard TD run. However, Curry came back to make it 20-6 on a 67-yard strike from Cote to Cawlina late in the half.
The Mariners drew within 20-14 with 1:1 left in the third quarter on a 46-yard scoring burst by Ferrar to close out a 92-yard march, then came up with the winner early in the fourth.
