DURHAM, New Hampshire — Marissa Shaw’s unassisted goal at the 62:04 mark gave UMaine at 3-2 field hockey victory over the New Hampshire Wildcats on Sunday as the Black Bears finished the regular season with a school-record 17 victories.
The win was also the 100th career victory for Maine head coach Josette Babineau.
Meg Flatley scored a goal in each half for UNH, but Sydney Veljacic answered for Maine in the first half and Danielle Aviani scored for the Bears in the second half.
Emma Cochran and Emily Corbett split time in goal for Maine and each made two saves. Melissa Rize finished with seven for UNH (8-10).
Maine (17-3) gained the No. 2 seed in the America East playoffs and will play West Division opponent California at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
Husson, UMF advance to final
Husson University and UMaine-Farmington will battle for the North Atlantic Conference title next Saturday in Bangor after each team posted semifinal wins on Saturday with UMF beating Thomas 2-1 and defending champ Husson defeating Colby-Sawyer 6-1.
At Farmington, Rebecca Young’s goal off a scramble in front of the goal with about five minutes left in the game lifted the Beavers to victory.
Emily Leighton scored off an Erica Blake assist in the first half for Thomas, but Andrea Stemm equalized for UMF when she converted a Lindsey Whitney assist at the 58:04 mark of the second half.
Abbie Charrier finished with six saves on 10 shots for Thomas, which finished at 8-9 while Patty Smith made three saves on five shots for UMF, now 10-4.
At Bangor, Taylor Shaw rattled off five straight goals to help the Eagles roll by Colby-Sawyer.
The five goals tied a Husson record of most goals scored in a game set by two-time All-American Sabrina Vaillancourt on Nov. 3, 2012.
After Lauren Russell scored unassisted 1:03 into the game for Husson, Shaw followed with goals at 5:16, 6:19 and 19:23 in the first half and then at 35:11 and 42:24 in the second half. Two of the goals were unassisted while Russell picked up two assists and Olivia Plaisted added one.
Anne Marie Provencal made four saves on 11 shots for Husson (7-9).
Men’s Basketball
Maine 105, USM 58
A year ago, the tone for the University of Maine men’s basketball team’s forgettable season was set during an exhibition loss to the University of Southern Maine.
On Saturday, the Black Bears faced an outside opponent for the first time this season and had a much more favorable result.
Freshman Devine Eke scored 17 points, including 9-for-11 free-throw shooting, and grabbed seven rebounds to spark Division I UMaine to a 104-58 victory over Division III USM.
The Black Bears received plenty of production from their freshmen, including Issac Vann’s 15 points and eight rebounds and a 12-point, eight-rebound, four-assist effort from Ilija Stojiljkovic.
UMaine shot 56 percent from the field (38-for-68) and made 20 of 27 free throws while forcing some of the Huskies 20 turnovers and winning the rebounding battle 45-42.
The Black Bears bolted to a 41-9 lead during the first 15 minutes of the contest. Senior forward Till Gloger led the attack with 10 first-half points on perfect 5-for-5 shooting.
USM scored 41 points in the second half, but was unable to slow UMaine, which rolled up 57 points in the final 20 minutes.
Women’s Soccer
MMA 1, Husson 0
At Castine, Susana DeFrank scored in the 67th minute to lead Maine Maritime Academy to a North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal victory on Saturday night.
The Mariners outshot the Eagles 18-11, and landed seven shots on net to the Husson’s two.
Maggie McConkey recorded two saves, in her program-record ninth shutout of the season, while Husson’s Kayla Gordon tallied six stops.
The Mariners improve to 10-7-1, and advance to a Tuesday semifinal at Castleton University (Vt.). Husson finishes at 8-10-1.
Hartford 1, Maine 0
At West Hartford, Connecticut, on Sunday, Elise Galipo’s first goal of the season came at a good time for Hartford as she scored at the 72nd minute to beat the Black Bears in an America East semifinal.
Hartford finished the contest with a 14-2 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corner kick chances.
Claudia Dube-Trempe finished with three saves for Maine (9-8-2) and Jessica Jurg had one for Hartford (11-3-4).
Men’s Soccer
UMF 2, Colby-Sawyer 1
At New London, New Hampshire, UMaine-Farmington’s Yusuf Yama notched his third game-winning goal of the season when he scored off the right post 4:43 into the second overtime after a failed clear attempt by the Chargers’ backline to give the No. 6 Beavers the upset over No. 3 Colby-Sawyer in a North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal.
UMF (6-9-3) advanced to a Wednesday semifinal at Castleton (Vt.).
UMF broke through in the 59th minute when Uriah Forest-Bulley (Turner Falls, Mass.) headed home a goal from a Ryan Fairbanks assist. Matt Wilson finished with 10 saves for UMF.
