LINCOLN, Maine — A convicted sex offender was issued a summons Thursday for failing to make deadlines for telling officials of his new address, police said Friday.
Benjamin Grubaugh, 31, was cited Thursday for Class D failure to comply with the Maine Sex Offender Registry Act, police said.
Police issued the summons after getting a tip Thursday from residents that Grubaugh was living at 13 Katahdin Ave. His Maine Sex Offender Registry entry lists him as a transient and a lifetime sex offender listing registrant.
Grubaugh told police of his new address on Nov. 3, said Detective Mark Fucile, Lincoln Police Department spokesman. Grubaugh has allegedly lived at the Katahdin Avenue residence since July 3.
Under state law, Grubaugh is required to tell police of his new address within 24 hours of moving there. He also failed to tell the Maine Sex Offender Registry of his address change in writing within five days of his move, as the law requires, a registry official said.
Grubaugh was sentenced in February 2006 in Missouri for first degree sexual misconduct with a child, according to the registry. The details of the conviction were not available on Thursday.
A Class D offense carries penalties of as many as 364 days incarceration and a $2,000 fine.
Fucile said he was pleased that residents alerted police regarding Grubaugh’s location. He said that Grubaugh is the third sex offender police have cited with that statute in 13 months.
Fucile encouraged residents to call police regarding potential sex offender registry issues at 794-2221. He handles registry issues for Lincoln police.
“The big thing is we appreciate the public’s input. In this case we usually get notified by the registry. We didn’t get notified on this one, so it was a good catch by the residents who were inquiring about his status,” Fucile said.
Grubaugh is due in Lincoln District Court on Dec. 8, Fucile said.
