Red Sox pick up Kimbrel in trade with Padres
The Boston Red Sox acquired closer Craig Kimbrel from the San Diego Padres in a trade that sends four prospects to the Padres, the teams announced Friday.
The Padres will get outfielder Manuel Margot, shortstop Javier Guerra, middle infielder Carlos Asuaje and right-handed pitcher Logan Allen.
The main piece of the trade was Boston’s acquisition of Kimbrel, and it’s a significant move by new Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.
The Red Sox already have a standout reliever in 40-year-old Koji Uehara, who had 25 saves and 2.23 ERA in 2015. And now they add the 27-year-old Kimbrel, who had a 2.58 ERA and 39 saves in his only season with the Padres.
The 2015 season amounted to an off year for Kimbrel, who had at least 42 saves in each of his final three seasons with the Atlanta Braves and never finished with an ERA above 1.61 in any of those years.
The Red Sox will have control of the next three years of Kimbrel’s contract, according to CBSSports.com. He has two years and $24 million remaining on his contract, with a $13 million option for 2018.
Garrett discusses tirade with Bryant
A day after Dez Bryant’s tirade against the media, Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett acknowledged Friday that he talked to the star wide receiver and the rest of the team about conducting themselves like professionals.
“I believe that 100 percent of our guys do things the right way about 98 percent of the time,” Garrett said Friday at his news conference.
“It’s a great teaching opportunity for us as coaches and a great learning opportunity for Dez and our whole football team and that’s what we’ve tried to do, is use it as an opportunity to get better.”
Bryant left the locker room Thursday during the open media access session after a prolonged rant aimed at reporters.
Status uncertain for Roethlisberger, Bridgewater
The Pittsburgh Steelers listed quarterback Ben Roethlisberger as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns.
Roethlisberger sprained his left foot in last Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders and was wearing a walking boot earlier in the week. The Steelers say he was a limited practice participant Friday.
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is also listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders as he recovers from a concussion.
Bridgewater was knocked out of last Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Rams when he received a blow to the head from Lamarcus Joyner.
The Vikings listed him as a full practice participant on Friday and coach Mike Zimmer is confident Bridgewater will be cleared to start.
Murphy declines Mets’ offer
New York Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy declined the team’s one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer Friday.
Toronto Blue Jays left-hander David Price and Orioles slugger Chris Davis also declined the offers and will be among the most coveted players on the market.
Murphy, who hit seven home runs in the playoffs and set a record with home runs in six games in a row, was just 3-for-20 in the World Series and made a critical error to contribute to the winning Game Four rally by the Kansas City Royals.
Kansas City scored three runs after Murphy’s misplay of a routine ground ball.
He batted .278 with 14 homers in the regular season.
