LIMERICK, Maine — An American Legion treasurer is facing a felony theft charge after sheriff’s deputies learned some of the post’s money had been diverted into his personal bank account.

John Butler, 69, was formally charged Monday but not arrested, York County Sheriff William King said.

Butler is the treasurer for American Legion Post 55 in Limerick, which contacted sheriff’s deputies after members became suspicious about improprieties with the post’s finances over the last year.

King said an investigation done over a three-month span shows approximately $1,900 of the post’s money had been diverted into Butler’s personal bank account.

Butler will appear in court to face the charge Feb. 19.
