BIDDEFORD, Maine — The University of New England Nor’easters used a balanced scoring attack to beat the University of Southern Maine Huskies 88-77 in men’s basketball action Tuesday night at Harold Alfond Forum.
Devin Thompson paced UNE with 22 points and C.J. Autry added 19. Gavin Dibble contributed 15 points, Jean-Luc Parker put in 13 and Ben Judson had 10.
UNE took a two-point halftime lead and then outscored the Huskies 51-42 in the second half.
Zach Leal scored 17 points to lead USM (1-1) while Jose Novchanthavong added 16, Atencio Martin netted 14 and Cole Libby had 12.
Martin also had eight rebounds and Leal had seven as USM had a 39-38 edge.
Nichols 90, Thomas 76
At Dudley, Massachusetts, Nichols took a one-point lead at the half and then outscored the Terriers of Waterville 56-43 in the second half to earn the victory.
Irving Eggleston paced Nichols (2-0) with 24 points and Marcos Echevarria added 21. Christian Horton grabbed 10 rebounds to help the Bison gain a 35-31 team edge.
Tyheem Simon sparked Thomas (0-2) with 28 points and six rebounds. Levi Barnes chipped in with 15 points, Carlos Gonzalez added 12 and Adam Carlsen added 10.
Women’s Basketball
UNE 74, USM 62
At Biddeford, Alanna Vose scored 10 of her game-high 29 points in the fourth quarter when the University of New England outscored the University of Southern Maine 26-12 to take the victory.
UNE trailed 50-48 after three quarters, but rattled off a 15-0 scoring surge to start the fourth quarter to earn the win in their opener.
Alicia Brown chipped in with 15 points for UNE and Sadie DiPierro added 14.
Ella Ramonas paced USM (1-2) with 18 points. Alex Srolovitz added 14 points and Gretchen Anderson put in 10.
