BANGOR, Maine — City police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl that occurred on Wednesday morning, according to Sgt. Tim Cotton.

Cotton said a call for “a child in breathing distress” came in shortly after 9 a.m. at a Center Street residence.

Firefighters, paramedics and police arrived shortly after, but the child did not survive, Cotton said.

“Anytime a child in the state of Maine is deceased, there’s always an investigation to see if we can find out how it happened,” the sergeant said, noting state protocol in that an investigation ensues whenever there is a death involving a child under the age of 3.

Cotton declined to release any further details.
