ALFRED, Maine — Police are searching for the driver of a vehicle that hit and severely injured a local man near an outdoor party on Kennebunk Road early Saturday, and are asking partygoers for help.

“We hope that some of the young people who had been there would have called in,” Stephen McCausland, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman, said Sunday.

John Caramihalis, 21, was struck by the vehicle about 2:45 a.m. and an anonymous caller reported the crash, McCausland said.

While investigating the hit-and-run, Maine State Police troopers found a large group of young adults holding a party about a mile away along the dirt road, McCausland said.

He said he did not know whether anyone was charged with underage drinking.

Caramihalis suffered serious injuries after being hit by the vehicle and was taken to the Maine Medical Center in Portland. No vehicle description was available, McCausland said.

“He’s still in critical condition,” a nursing supervisor from Maine Medical said Sunday afternoon.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Maine State Police in Gray at 657-3030.
