The Maine Maritime Academy men’s basketball team split a pair of games over the weekend in New York, beating SUNY Maritime 65-58 on Saturday and losing to the United States Merchant Marine Academy 74-67 on Sunday.
At Throggs Neck on Saturday, Brendan Newcomb scored 23 points to lead MMA of Castine to victory.
Tyler Thayer contributed 14 points, six steals and three assists for the Mariners, while Dylan Stevens posted 11 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Patrick MacDonald led the 0-3 Privateers with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. John Liccese tallied nine points and six assists.
On Sunday in Kings Point, USMMA took a three-point halftime lead and then held off MMA for the victory.
Preston Padgett led Merchant Marine (2-1) with 20 points and eight rebounds while Matt Miller added 18 points and five rebounds and David Smith and Hunter Jones each had 11 points.
Newcomb tallied a career-high 27 points to lead MMA (1-2) and was 9 of 9 from the line. Thayer chipped in with 12 points, four assists and four rebounds. Stevens added 10 points and Tyler Gilson had a team-high six rebounds.
UMPI 63, UMF 40
At Farmington on Saturday, Chase Vicaire’s 17-point effort carried the Owls to victory.
Maurice Harris had a double-double with 12 points and 10 points and Kevin Collins also charted 12 points for the University of Maine-Presque Isle (2-1).
Nick Hilton scored a team-high 15 points for the University of Maine-Farmington (0-2).
Colby 102, Curry 88
At Worcester, Massachusetts, Chris Hudnut scored a career-best 38 points with six rebounds and five assists to help Colby beat Curry in the consolation game of the WPI Tournament on Saturday.
Ryan Jann racked up 22 points and five assists for the 1-1 Mules, while Luke Westman posted a double-double of 11 points and 10 boards. Patrick Stewart added 11 points.
Trey Jones led the Colonels (0-4) with 21 points and Paul Preziosi scored 20.
Thomas, Bates each win two
At Larry Mahaney Gym in Waterville, tourney host Thomas and Bates of Lewiston each picked up two victories over the weekend in the Charlie Ryan Classic.
Thomas beat UMaine-Fort Kent 63-57 and Bates stopped Norwich 79-49 on Saturday and Thomas then beat Norwich 79-59 and Bates defeated UMFK 86-65 on Sunday.
On Saturday, Thomas surged to a six-point halftime lead over UMFK and then held off the Bengals for the victory.
Levi Barnes paced Thomas with 25 points and eight rebounds while Tyheem Simon added 18 points and Carlos Gonzalez contributed 10 points and nine rebounds.
Joe McCloskey scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead UMFK. Qaadir Ali added 12 points and Roosevelt Smith had 13 rebounds.
In the second game, Bates surged to a 36-19 halftime lead en route to the win.
Malcolm Delpeche paced the Bobcats with 20 points and eight rebounds. Marcus Delpeche and Shawn Strickland each added 10 points.
Ryan Fitzgerald and Mike Hogervorst each scored 10 points for Norwich.
On Sunday, Thomas connected on 10 of 31 3-point shots and controlled the rebounding game (45-32) to pick up the victory over Norwich.
Adam Carlsen sparked Thomas (2-2) with 21 points while Barnes added 18 and Simon netted 16.
Ryan Booth and Fitzgerald each scored 12 points to lead Norwich (1-3).
In the second game, Bates used a 21-0 scoring outburst in the second half to pull away from UMFK.
Marcus Delpeche recorded 16 points and nine rebounds to lead Bates (2-0). Mike Boornazian added 15 points and Josh Britten put in 13.
Jake Rioux led UMFK (4-4) with 11 points while Fletcher Brown and Smith each put in nine. McCloskey contributed seven points and six rebounds.
Women’s Basketball
St. Joseph’s 75, MMA 55
At Castine on Saturday, the Monks built a 42-18 halftime lead en route to the win.
Kelsi McNamara and Morgan Cahill propelled Saint Joseph’s of Standish (3-1) with 15 points each. Cahill pulled down a game-high six rebounds.
Alayne Felix paced Maine Maritime Academy (1-2) with 22 points.
Colby 72, William Smith 39
At Bridgewater, Massachusetts, Carylanne Wolfington scored 14 points and earned tourney MVP honors as the Mules beat William Smith College in the Cave Classic title game on Saturday.
Emily Davis also scored 14 points en route to an all-tournament nod for 2-0 Colby College of Waterville. Mia Diplock and Haley Driscoll both had 11 points for Colby.
Gabrielle Eure led William Smith (1-2) with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
UMPI drops two
At Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, the UMaine-Presque Isle Owls dropped two games in the the Pepsi Tip-off Tourney over the weekend, losing to Susquehanna 85-40 on Saturday and then losing to Morrisville State 67-50 in the consolation game Saturday.
Angie Schedler paced Susquehanna (2-1) with 18 points and Lexi Biggs-Garcia added 12.
Sydney Churchill led UMPI with 13 point and Megan Jellison contributed seven.
On Sunday, Morrisville State outscored UMPI 17-7 in the second quarter and 19-11 in the third to pull away for the victory. Haley Kilmartin led Morrisville (2-2) with 13 points and Jordan Anderson added 19.
Amanda Hotham turned in a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead UMPI (0-3). Holli Boyle added 11 points and Churchill netted nine.
