BANGOR, Maine — Periods of freezing rain and drizzle Tuesday evening caused some major headaches for Maine motorists, police officers, emergency medical personnel and others whose job it is to keep everyone safe.
In Bangor, things got slippery quickly when the rain began to fall, Sgt. Kevin MacLaren of the Bangor Police Department said.
He said that the combination of light rain and cold ground resulted in slick conditions that led to several accidents, including a three-car crash near Fourteenth and Ohio streets.
“The roads are slippery and people aren’t paying attention and are driving too fast for conditions,” he said. The city’s public works department was out applying salt Tuesday night, he said.
Things weren’t much better elsewhere in the area.
“Don’t drive anywhere in the state of Maine right now,” a dispatcher with the Penobscot Regional Communications Center said.
A dispatcher assigned to the Maine State Police’s Bangor barracks said that while several cars slid off Interstate 95, there were no serious injuries as of 9:30 p.m.
