Red Sox Hot Stove Night set Dec. 14

BANGOR — Boston Red Sox radio broadcasters Joe Castiglione and Dave O’Brien will take part in the 12th Zoneradio Red Sox Hot Stove night on Monday, Dec. 14 at the Cross Insurance Center.

Red Sox games are broadcast during the season on Bangor radio station AM-620 WZON The Pulse, which is owned by writer Stephen King.

“Coming off a tough season, there will be plenty to talk about. A new president, new general manager and most likely new players will make this off-season one we’ll remember for a long while,” Zoneradio sports director Toby Nelson said in a news release. “The best part of all, we still give every single ticket away to this event. But, you will need a ticket to get in.

Tickets are being given away during shows on AM-620 and its sister stations, 100.3 WKIT and 103.1/98.3 FM WZLO.

Doors for the event open at 5 p.m. A silent auction will be held to benefit the Jimmy Fund and comedian Bob Marley will warm up the crowd at 6:30 p.m.

The Chicago Cubs landed right-hander John Lackey on Friday, reportedly giving the veteran a two-year, $32 million contact.

Lackey, 37, was seeking to join the Cubs to reunite with close friend and former Boston Red Sox teammate Jon Lester.

Pitchers Lackey, Pelfrey sign new deals

Lackey went 13-10 with a career-best 2.77 ERA for the St. Louis Cardinals last season. He went 1-0 with a 3.48 ERA in two postseason starts against the Cubs in the National League Division Series won by Chicago.

Lackey is 165-127 with a 3.92 ERA in 13 seasons with the Angels, Red Sox and Cardinals. He has been part of World Series-winning clubs in 2002 (Angels) and 2013 (Red Sox).

His postseason success was something that surely intrigued the Cubs. Lackey is 8-5 with a 3.11 ERA in 23 postseason appearances (20 starts) and is 2-1 with a 3.42 ERA in six World Series games (four starts).

Meanwhile, the Detroit Tigers agreed to terms on a two-year, $16 million deal with right-hander Mike Pelfrey, according to published reports.

The 31-year-old Pelfrey went 6-11 with a 4.26 ERA in 30 starts for the Minnesota Twins last season. He has a career mark of 61-81 with a 4.52 ERA in 10 major-league seasons — seven with the New York Mets and the last three with the Twins.

Lightning coach gets contract extension

The Tampa Bay Lightning signed head coach Jon Cooper to a multi-year contract extension on Friday.

Cooper is in the final year of his current contract. The extension is believed to be two years, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Cooper was named the eighth head coach in franchise history on March 25, 2013. He replaced Guy Boucher with 16 games remaining in the 2012-13 season.

A native of Prince George, British Columbia, Cooper has led the Lightning to a 112-70-23 record and a .602 winning percentage in 205 games.

He has guided the Lightning to the Stanley Cup playoffs in each of his two full seasons since coming to Tampa Bay, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2015. The Lightning are 12-11 with 27 points this season.

Jets’ Revis sidelined

The New York Jets will be without standout cornerback Darrelle Revis when they face Odell Beckham Jr. and the New York Giants on Sunday.

Revis suffered a concussion on Nov. 22 against the Houston Texans. He didn’t practice this week and was officially declared out for the game on Friday.

Revis remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol but he did attend meetings on Friday for the first time in two weeks.

The absence of Revis leaves the Jets in the position of having to defend Beckham without their top cornerback. Beckham has caught 72 passes for 1,005 yards and nine touchdowns.

Complicating matters is that backup cornerback Marcus Williams is doubtful with a knee injury. He is a game-day decision.
