PORTLAND, Maine — A Biddeford man is in jail after taking items from at least two unlocked cars in Portland Sunday morning, making a purchase with a stolen credit card and giving a false name.
Stephen Desmond, 31, has been charged with two counts of motor vehicle burglary and theft and misuse of a credit card, according to Portland police.
A caller notified police about a suspicious man in the area of Cumberland and Deering avenues around 8:45 a.m. Sunday, police said.
When police approached him, Desmond said his name was Benjamin Bean. Police said a stolen credit card was found on Desmond, and later learned he had used the card to make a purchase.
The vehicles from which the items were allegedly stolen were unlocked, according to police.
Desmond is being held on $20,000 bail at the Cumberland County Jail, police said.
Biddeford police also have an active arrest warrant out for Desmond, according to Portland police.
